Boston arrives in Miami at 71-59 and currently holds the American League’s second Wild Card spot by 6.5 games. The Red Sox have won five of their last six games, closing a successful homestand with a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.
Miami, on the other hand, is trying to make a late postseason charge of its own. The Marlins are 67-64 and four games behind the San Diego Padres for the National League’s final Wild Card spot after sweeping the Washington Nationals over the weekend. Miami has also been at its best at home, posting a 41-25 record at loanDepot park.
Ranger Suárez gets the ball for Boston after improving to 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA in his latest start. Suárez allowed four runs across 5.1 innings against Arizona, but all four came on a grand slam by Gabriel Moreno as the Red Sox responded with a 9-4 victory.
The Marlins counter with Sandy Alcantara, who enters the opener at 13-8 with a 3.46 ERA. The former Cy Young Award winner has been excellent in August, allowing only four earned runs across 26 innings for a 1.38 ERA over four starts.
With both teams coming off weekend sweeps and still firmly involved in their respective Wild Card races, tonight’s opener brings some added weight to an otherwise rare late-August meeting between Boston and Miami.
