There’s more day baseball on tap Wednesday as the Chicago Cubs (76-57) and Arizona Diamondbacks (70-63) wrap up a three-game series at Chase Field. The Cubs won Monday’s series opener with a 7-0 shutout, but the Diamondbacks completed a late-inning comeback with a walk-off 5-4 win Tuesday to set up Wednesday afternoon’s rubber match to decide the series.

After a dominant 19-2 victory against Seattle on Sunday, the Cubs went to Arizona and picked up right where they left off with a shutout win powered by six extra-base hits, including home runs from Michael Conforto and Carson Kelly. Veteran right-hander and recent acquisition Kevin Gausman also played a large role in the win, tossing seven shutout innings.

Chicago took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday and got another seven scoreless innings from its starter, this time Clay Holmes. However, the Diamondbacks’ offense rallied against the Cubs’ bullpen, scoring three runs in the eighth before rookie outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt played the hero with a walk-off two-run home run in the ninth to complete the comeback win.

The Diamondbacks will send All-Star left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez to the mound for Wednesday’s series finale. Rodríguez is 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA this season and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings in his last start on Aug. 21. The Cubs will counter with 2025 All-Star left-hander Matthew Boyd, who isn’t quite having the season he had a year ago but went 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA from May 3 through July 29 before his recent struggles in August, during which he owns a 6.12 ERA across four starts.

Diamondbacks vs. Cubs Best Bet: Corbin Carroll Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI (-125)

Corbin Carroll has been held in check by the Cubs through the first two games of this series, going 1-for-7 with a walk and three strikeouts, but the Diamondbacks’ right fielder has been having an overall productive month of August. Carroll is slashing .271/.376/.541 with a .917 OPS and nine RBIs this month.

While Carroll is 0-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts all-time against Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, he is batting .338 with a 1.022 OPS this season against left-handed pitching. Boyd has also struggled recently, allowing 25 hits and 19 runs (17 earned) over 25 innings in August.

It’s a smaller sample size, but Carroll has had more success during day games this year, while Boyd has a much higher ERA when he pitches during the day compared to at night.
